Come take a ride with me

About a couple of years ago, on a cold wintry evening, I was busy at home lounging about and generally evaluating the relative merits and demerits of hot samosas and fresh rasgullas. My sister had woke up just a minute ago and was close to an emotional breakdown because she had her exams and tuition class in 10 minutes and she thought she was never going to make it in time. The chivalrious (since there was a damsel in distress) and doting (do I need to explain this?) brother therefore offered to take her to the class in time, and she hurriedly went to pack her bags with some sceptic hope on her face. We were off on a scooter with exactly 8 minutes remaining to the zero-hour, and it usually takes about 15-18 minutes to reach there from our home. It was evening time, and therefore the usual office rush hour traffic added spice to the flavour. But smooth seas don't make good sailors, and yours truly specialises in sailing out of whirlpools. So amidst the hit-or-miss traffic, wailing children, scooting dogs, over-enthusiastic buses I kept driving. My usually chirpy sister was unusually silent during this time, and I had even to check if she was still sitting behind me a couple of times --- you never know when good luck arrives ;)

When we finally reached there, I checked my watch and there was still about a minute left to the deadline. I turned my head towards my sister with a smug 'James Bond' look on my face almost expecting her to wax eloquent in praise about her gem of a brother, etc. Instead, she looked thunderstruck... and the expression on her face was simply priceless! She let out a huge sigh, and it seemed to me that she seemed to breathe after having held her breath for a long long time. I don't need to discuss the colourful way in which this was presented to my mom once she came home and the tirade that followed --- suffice it to say that now whenever she needs a ride somewhere and if she needs me to drive her there, she makes sure that she has more than enough time to spare ;)

My mom on the other hand seems to believe that scooters are made to be driven at nothing more than 20 kmph. Whenever she is pillion-riding with me, a single stretch of straight road when there is no traffic is the best place I can possibly use the accelerator: to maintain 20-25 kmph. Anything more, and she uses her hand-brake: i.e. pinches me real hard (depending on how quickly she wants me to slow down) on my stomach and I have to respond immediately. And oh, did I mention the continious running evaluation of everyone I overtake telling me why that was a bad decision? :D

But now this is America, where the minimum speeds on freeways is 60 miles per hour (yeah about 96 k.m.ph.)!! And I'll get my driving license soon... yaay!! I care about safety and all: am in fact the only person in my house perhaps who insists on riding with a helmet even when I am going nearby. But the fun is about to begin here .... *snigger snigger* Come on, people: if you feel bored or suddenly feel that the spice of life has gone away from you, come and sit beside me in a car and I promise you a wake-up call! :D

Alka, well yeah that is a secret... sometimes you do need to do that on purpose just to see the reaction! I tell you it is priceless!! :D

Das, yeah it was surely a lot of fun. So long as no real cars are involved when I am trying to parallel-park, it should be fun :D

P.S. - isn't the table supposed to be indexed by hot c? :)

Maa khuh chihal a panjam hastam

The hit counter on my blog reached 20074 today. Why you may ask, is that news, and why hadn't I cheered myself up when it was at 20,000 for example? Well, it is news because 20074 has been a very special number for me during my entire college life: it was my admission number, and my system-wide unique identity. It is strange, and surprising, how these numbers become a part of our identity. The social security number, the passport number, the id number in the college, or even your roll number somehow becomes an almost innate part of the day-to-day life. As soon as I see the same number somewhere else: maybe on a telephone, on a hitcounter, maybe somewhere else... a thousand memories are triggered. As my eyes struck the hitcounter showing 20074 right now, I was thrown back to memories of filling up exam answer sheets, hostel admission forms, library recall requests, and so much more! I believe that number was present on almost every official form which I filled in college: even when

Swami Vivekananda and the Indian Renaissance

The following is an article I sent to my mother based on which she presented at one of her conferences. Do read. =======================================  The common perception of Swami Vivekananda as the religious leader who preached Hinduism to the West and established the Ramakrishna Mission in India is a very limited definition of the impact he had on the collective psyche of the common Indian. Besides his direct impact in adding steam to the Indian Renaissance, a large part of his thoughts and writings also affected the other stalwarts of the movement. While fathoming the entirety of his impact on the Indian Renaissance would be impossible, we will briefly explore some aspects of his influence in the following pages. Raja Ram Mohan Roy is generally credited with ushering in the revolution. His numerous ventures that contradicted the prevailing religious opinion of right and wrong broke the stranglehold of the prevalent quasi-religion, the norms of society and its sole autocrati

Tips and tricks for the GRE

Hello everybody, First of all, I thank all of you for the good wishes and congratulations that you have sent... either as mails, PMs, or anyhow. I have also been getting a lot of mails from people asking for tips and tricks and how I made it to the 800 in quants and 700 on the verbal. So if you are prepared for a lot of gyaan (which I love shelling out), here you go: 1. How long does it take to prepare? A: There is no definite time frame. But about 2-3 dedicated hours a day, for about two-and-a-half months is enough. Then, again, it is dependent on your level. To find that out, I'd suggest that you should take one paper-based test that is there in the front of the book (Barron's, Kaplan, anything... or even the Big Book). If you score about 750 on the quants, and about 500 on the verbal (no cheatings, etc) then the time frame I've said should be enough. If you scored more, great... you should try to get to around 1550!! But if less... well, spruce up depending on how
