A comment from my mother

I have been posting on my blog since the last year or so, and learnt how to use email and browse the net in the first year at my engineering college. Until about 2-3 years ago, I was the most net-savvy person in my family of six. As you can understand, telling somebody that I'll drop off an email to let them know about my present hostel address was as good as telling that I'll tie the address to the leg of a pigeon and let it fly. But things have changed since then.

For one, my siblings and I are all computer-savvy now and keep in touch through email most of the time. But getting my mom to come to the computer was another story. So, after much persuasion, she joined a course at NIIT, and she became computer-literate, so to say. So I had felt a tinge of ineffable joy when she sent the first email to me. Actually, any letter, phone call, anything from my mother is special. But that email now told me that I could be in touch all the time, anytime!

But now something special has happened again. She has put her first comment in my blog, which she has been following for quite some time. Take a look at this, at the end of the page, and read the comment from her. Just in case you were wondering, my nickname at home is 'Chhanu'. I think I have read that comment about 10 times now, and will read it again someday whenever I miss her.

I don't know what feelings you can gather from that comment, but I am overjoyed. The fact that she is a PhD in English Literature is evident I guess from the little paragraph. What may not be so evident is the fact that I owe all my English vocabulary, my style of writing, etc. to her and so if you like my style of writing, or if you have heard me at debates or elocution competitions, all the credit should go to her! And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

But here is the catch... she still insists on getting hand-written letters from me. So I need to go off and finish a letter that I started writing long ago and post it home. In the meantime, you go home and give your mom a hug!

  2. I can feel how u wud have felt reading ur mom's comment....I too read it...my mom still doest know that I have a blog of mine... but some how some times dont want her to read it...coz it will make me conscious then..and may be i cant write about all my depressions then there..my mom is an extremely positive minded person and she is always there is my darkest moments giving me the much needed strength. She will not like to see her daughter weak and suffering...though she knows most of it am sure..the way she can predict about me is amazing...

  3. :) Thanks for dropping by. Well... Lucky You! It'll be a good another 100 Year war to convince my mom that the computer isn't all that a horror! Making her send me an sms on her own is the least that i could do! hehe... I know that your joy knew no bounds on seeing appreciation from your mom...

Afterall, it's only your beloved who can make a difference to your life. Cheers to NIIT and the spirit of learning!

  5. Jeevan, yes... wished you luck already! And it will be a wonderful day. No doubt! I guess you'll realise that the day it happens.

Oindrilla, the whole point is not be conscious of people who read it. Baring the civilities to be observed which go by the name of net etiquette, it is ok. In fact, I think if you are able to express yourself better here, your mom may be able to help you better if she reads them here.

Just to let you know, my mom had read the post titled "Homesick" and was moved to tears. Then she called me, and we had a long nice talk. Find it somewhere on my blog... and tell me if you ever felt the same.

Ships, hey... welcome aboard! Guess what, my mom is still not very comfortable with sending an SMS. I am glad that you could understand the joy I felt on reading her comment.

P.S.- you should curse your cache for not showing you that your original comment was already here!

Maa khuh chihal a panjam hastam

The hit counter on my blog reached 20074 today. Why you may ask, is that news, and why hadn't I cheered myself up when it was at 20,000 for example? Well, it is news because 20074 has been a very special number for me during my entire college life: it was my admission number, and my system-wide unique identity. It is strange, and surprising, how these numbers become a part of our identity. The social security number, the passport number, the id number in the college, or even your roll number somehow becomes an almost innate part of the day-to-day life. As soon as I see the same number somewhere else: maybe on a telephone, on a hitcounter, maybe somewhere else... a thousand memories are triggered. As my eyes struck the hitcounter showing 20074 right now, I was thrown back to memories of filling up exam answer sheets, hostel admission forms, library recall requests, and so much more! I believe that number was present on almost every official form which I filled in college: even when

Swami Vivekananda and the Indian Renaissance

The following is an article I sent to my mother based on which she presented at one of her conferences. Do read. =======================================  The common perception of Swami Vivekananda as the religious leader who preached Hinduism to the West and established the Ramakrishna Mission in India is a very limited definition of the impact he had on the collective psyche of the common Indian. Besides his direct impact in adding steam to the Indian Renaissance, a large part of his thoughts and writings also affected the other stalwarts of the movement. While fathoming the entirety of his impact on the Indian Renaissance would be impossible, we will briefly explore some aspects of his influence in the following pages. Raja Ram Mohan Roy is generally credited with ushering in the revolution. His numerous ventures that contradicted the prevailing religious opinion of right and wrong broke the stranglehold of the prevalent quasi-religion, the norms of society and its sole autocrati

Tips and tricks for the GRE

Hello everybody, First of all, I thank all of you for the good wishes and congratulations that you have sent... either as mails, PMs, or anyhow. I have also been getting a lot of mails from people asking for tips and tricks and how I made it to the 800 in quants and 700 on the verbal. So if you are prepared for a lot of gyaan (which I love shelling out), here you go: 1. How long does it take to prepare? A: There is no definite time frame. But about 2-3 dedicated hours a day, for about two-and-a-half months is enough. Then, again, it is dependent on your level. To find that out, I'd suggest that you should take one paper-based test that is there in the front of the book (Barron's, Kaplan, anything... or even the Big Book). If you score about 750 on the quants, and about 500 on the verbal (no cheatings, etc) then the time frame I've said should be enough. If you scored more, great... you should try to get to around 1550!! But if less... well, spruce up depending on how
